Dragonflies have been dancing in the sky for some 300 million years and may be one of the Earth’s earliest flying creatures. Time has allowed evolution to hone their aerial proficiency and mosquito hunting prowess while also allowing for the beauty and elegance of their gem-tone bodies to diversify and disperse! Human artists have long been fascinated by dragonflies and damselflies, creating ancient pictographs and petroglyphs in the landscape as well as featuring in the pottery, clothing, and jewelry of early cultures.

In this workshop, we’ll spend some time outdoors marveling at these fliers, making our own observations. After our inspiration, we’ll head indoors to sketch, ink, and paint from specimens from VTSU Castleton’s Dragonfly/Damselfly collections. Perhaps a Haiku, or two, or ten will emerge by the end of the workshop, along with some elegant renditions of these creatures soaring through our nature journals.

If you’re interested in learning more about dragonflies and damselflies, from the Riveredge Nature Center.

Drawing, sketching, and watercolor experience are not necessary, all skill levels welcome.
