Smaller than a softball, Northern Saw-whet Owls are some of Vermont’s most elusive residents. In the fall, many of these tiny owls undertake long journeys to wintering grounds farther south. In 2024, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ established a Saw-whet Owl banding station to trap and monitor these migrants as they pass through the forests at our Nature Center.
The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Field Research Team invites you to join them for a shift to learn about the banding process and how their work, and that of researchers at hundreds of banding stations around the country, is shedding light on the lives of these secretive birds.
If we get birds in hand, our team will demonstrate how these birds are carefully weighed, measured, and banded before release back to the wild. Please note, while the chances are good, we cannot guarantee that we will successfully capture any owls during this event.
This program is designed for adults. Interested youth 8 and up may participate with an adult.
For the health and safety of the birds, the banding station is not open in rainy weather. In the event that weather forces us to cancel, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will contact you the day of the event.
