DESCRIPTION:Artist Exhibition 鈥� Betsy Smith\nNovember 1 to January 31\nNeale Pavilion / 黑料不打烊 Nature Center \nAbout Betsy Smith: \nBetsy鈥檚 artwork is a celebration of the amazing natural world around us\, from distant galaxies to the fascinating wild creatures with whom we share our sacred Earth. Her preferred mediums are watercolors and acrylics. She particularly enjoys watercolor painting on location\, where the experience of sunlight\, weather\, and birdsongs adds a lively dimension to the creative process. Betsy loves the feeling of being an integral part of the landscape as she is painting. Sketching birds and other wildlife also gives her joy. Betsy鈥檚 sincere hope is that through her artwork she can share her love of wild creatures and the special places they call home. \nBetsy grew up in an artistic family who encouraged her to follow her dreams wherever they might lead. Although artistically inclined\, she developed an early fascination with aviation and space\, learning to fly at age 16. \nDuring her flying career\, Betsy always made time for art\, attending painting workshops and sketch-journaling while on her flying trips. Through her membership in the International Association of Astronomical Artists\, Betsy was able to combine her interests in art and the cosmos\, attending space art workshops in exotic locales. In 1995 she was one of twenty artists from around the world whose paintings were sent up to the Russian space station Mir for the first art exhibit in earth orbit. Her painting was the one selected by the crew to remain on Mir. \nAlong with watercolor landscape painting\, Betsy particularly enjoys sketching and painting wildlife\, often on location with the aid of a spotting scope. In 2016\, Betsy became a volunteer at 黑料不打烊\, and is especially thrilled at the opportunity to fly raptors in the education programs. Developed in the 1960s by Soren Eriksson\, a Swedish logger turned training instructor\, the Game of Logging combines Scandinavian logging techniques with the latest systems for working safely around trees. \nThe entire Game of Logging program is broken into four separate Levels. Level 1 provides an overview of chain saw safety and covers basic tree felling. Level 2 covers basic saw maintenance and chain sharpening techniques and provides another opportunity for tree felling. \nInstruction Provided By: Northeast Woodlands Training (NEWT) \nGame of Logging Level 1 Topics: \n\nEmergency Planning\nPersonal Protective Equipment\n5-Point Safety Check\nReactive Forces\nPrecision Plunge Cutting\n5-Point Felling Plan\nScoring the Stump\nPrecision Felling Practice\n\nGame of Logging Level 2 Topics:\nParticipants taking the Level 2 class must have completed Game of Logging Level 1 class. \n\nRoutine Chain Saw Maintenance\nArt of Chain Filing\nReleasing 鈥淪pring Poles鈥� Safely\nCompression & Tension\nPrecision Felling Practice\n\nCourse Requirements:\nParticipants must bring: \n\nA sound hard hat\nHearing & eye protection\nLunch & water\nLong pants & weather/work-appropriate clothing\nSturdy leather/work/hiking boots\nA good attitude; well-rested mind; and a drug/alcohol-free body.\nChain saw chaps\, if possible. The instructor has an extra pair of chaps that can be used when operating the chain saw.\nLeather/chain saw gloves (optional)\nPersonal chain saw (optional) with new chain. You can use the instructor鈥檚 saw if necessary.\n\nClass will be held rain or shine. Participants should dress for being outdoors all day.
