Investigating Land and Water: A Scavenger Hunt — What shapes of land and bodies of water can you find?

Land and Water Read Aloud Books:  


Materials:

  • Access to an outdoor space
  • Pencil or pen
  • Markers
  • Paper
  • A large piece of paper (for your map)
  • An adult to help
  • Choose an outdoor space that you would like to investigate.  This could be your backyard, a local park or somewhere else outside that is nearby.
  • On your paper, draw out the space that you will investigate.
    • For example if you are going to explore a local park, you might look at the park website to see where you鈥檒l investigate.
    • Example — I am going to explore this Wildlife Management Area:
  • On my paper, before I go, I will draw the trails, so I can write important things I find while I am on my hike.
  • Go to your outdoor space and on a scavenger hunt!
    • What did you find?
    • Rocks that look like whales?  
    • A brook that is flowing fast and fierce?
    • Draw a picture or write a description on your paper as you investigate your outdoor space.
  • After you go home, you will draw a large map of all the features you found on your scavenger hunt.  
    • Add labels of what you found and drawings of what to look for!
    • When someone else visits that same place, they can go looking for the treasures you found!
